Ziafate-O Suspension contains Sucralfate 1000 mg and Oxetacaine 20 mg per 10 ml, combining a mucosal protective agent with a local anaesthetic to provide relief from pain and irritation associated with gastric and oesophageal conditions.
Biozia's Ziafate-O Suspension is used primarily for conditions involving mucosal inflammation and ulceration of the upper GI tract, where it provides a dual benefit: Sucralfate forms a protective barrier over inflamed and ulcerated mucosa, while Oxetacaine offers fast-acting local pain relief.
This medicine is commonly used for:
Sucralfate + Oxetacaine combination is indicated for the symptomatic relief of peptic ulcer disease (gastric and duodenal), gastritis, oesophagitis, and gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD), particularly where mucosal protection and rapid local anaesthesia of the upper GI tract are concurrently required. Sucralfate provides cytoprotection and physical barrier protection at the ulcer site; Oxetacaine (oxethazaine) provides topical anaesthetic activity on inflamed mucous membranes for prompt pain relief.
When you swallow Ziafate-O Suspension, Sucralfate sticks to the inner lining of the stomach and ulcerated areas, forming a thick protective coating that shields the damaged tissue from stomach acid and helps it heal. Oxetacaine is a local anaesthetic that numbs the irritated lining of the oesophagus and stomach quickly, giving you fast relief from the burning and pain caused by acid.
Sucralfate, a basic aluminium salt of sucrose octasulphate, undergoes polymerisation in the acidic gastric environment (optimal at pH < 4) to form a viscous, adhesive gel that selectively binds to electropositive proteins at ulcer crater sites via ionic interactions, forming a protective physical barrier against acid, pepsin, and bile. It also stimulates prostaglandin synthesis, mucus and bicarbonate secretion, and promotes angiogenesis, contributing to cytoprotection and mucosal healing. Oxetacaine (oxethazaine) is a topical amide-type local anaesthetic that stabilises neuronal membranes by inhibiting voltage-gated sodium channels in the mucosal surface of the oesophagus and stomach, blocking afferent pain signals and providing rapid symptomatic analgesia.
Sucralfate works differently from most ulcer medicines — instead of reducing acid production, it sticks directly to the ulcer site and acts like a bandage, protecting the raw tissue from the stomach's own acid and pepsin while healing occurs underneath.
Ziafate-O Suspension is usually taken before meals and at bedtime, as prescribed by your doctor. Shake the bottle well before use. Do not mix with other medicines or food immediately before taking. Follow your doctor's specific instructions on timing and duration.
Always follow the dosage and schedule advised by your doctor — this is general guidance only.
Common side effects may include constipation, dry mouth, or a feeling of fullness — these are mainly related to the aluminium content in Sucralfate. Nausea or stomach discomfort may occasionally occur. These are usually mild. Tell your doctor if any side effect is severe or persistent.
Sucralfate reduces stomach acid like antacids or PPIs.
Sucralfate does not neutralise or reduce stomach acid. It works by forming a protective coating over ulcers and damaged mucosa, shielding the tissue from acid — a completely different and complementary mechanism.
If the burning sensation goes away quickly, the ulcer is healed.
Oxetacaine provides fast symptomatic relief from pain and burning, but the underlying ulcer takes time to heal. Symptomatic improvement does not mean the ulcer is cured — complete the prescribed course for full mucosal healing.
