Reviewed by Anil Kumar Goel, B.Pharm — Chairman, Biozia Lifesciences, 40+ years in the pharmaceutical industry.

“Diclo MR” tablets combine diclofenac, the muscle relaxant chlorzoxazone and paracetamol, and are one of the most familiar prescriptions for painful muscle spasm and back pain in India. This guide explains the combination, its uses, dosing and safety, and how Biozia supplies it as Dicrex-MR Tablet.

Key takeaways (TL;DR)

  • Each tablet contains Diclofenac Potassium 50 mg, Chlorzoxazone 250 mg and Paracetamol 325 mg.
  • “MR” here means muscle relaxant, not modified release.
  • Used for back pain, neck pain, sprains and other painful muscle spasm.
  • Usually one tablet two to three times a day after food, short-term, as prescribed.
  • Biozia supplies Dicrex-MR (10×10 blister) for PCD franchise and third-party manufacturing.

How it works

Diclofenac potassium is a fast-acting NSAID that reduces pain and inflammation. Chlorzoxazone relaxes skeletal muscle spasm through its action on the spinal cord. Paracetamol adds central pain relief. The potassium salt of diclofenac is absorbed quickly, which suits acute pain.

Uses

  • Acute low back pain, neck pain and stiff neck
  • Muscle spasm after sprains, strains or injury
  • Painful musculoskeletal conditions with spasm
  • Post-traumatic pain and swelling

Dosage

The usual adult dose is one tablet two to three times a day after meals, for the shortest period needed. Do not take with other NSAIDs or paracetamol-containing products.

Side effects

Common effects include acidity, nausea, stomach pain, drowsiness and dizziness. Chlorzoxazone may colour the urine orange or reddish, which is harmless. NSAIDs such as diclofenac can rarely cause stomach bleeding, kidney problems and an increased risk of heart attack or stroke, especially with high doses or long use.

Precautions and contraindications

  • Avoid with active peptic ulcer, gastrointestinal bleeding, or NSAID allergy (including aspirin-induced asthma).
  • Not for people with heart failure, ischaemic heart disease or stroke history, or severe liver or kidney disease.
  • Avoid alcohol; it raises drowsiness and liver risk.
  • Avoid in the third trimester of pregnancy and use earlier only on medical advice.
