About Tazobz-4.5gm Injection

Tazobz-4.5gm Injection is a broad-spectrum antibiotic injection containing Piperacillin 4 gm and Tazobactam 0.5 gm. Piperacillin is a powerful penicillin-type antibiotic, and Tazobactam is a beta-lactamase inhibitor that protects Piperacillin from being broken down by resistant bacteria — making this combination effective against a wide range of serious infections.

Used in hospital settings, Tazobz-4.5gm by Biozia Lifesciences is a trusted option for treating severe bacterial infections of the lungs, abdomen, skin, urinary tract, and other sites, especially when infections are caused by bacteria that may be resistant to other antibiotics.

Uses of Tazobz-4.5gm Injection

This medicine is commonly used for:

  • Treating severe lung infections, including hospital-acquired pneumonia
  • Managing serious abdominal infections like peritonitis and intra-abdominal sepsis
  • Treating complicated urinary tract infections
  • Managing skin and soft tissue infections including diabetic foot infections
  • Treating sepsis and febrile neutropenia in hospitalised patients

Indications

Indicated for the treatment of moderate to severe bacterial infections caused by susceptible organisms, including: lower respiratory tract infections (including hospital-acquired and ventilator-associated pneumonia), complicated intra-abdominal infections, complicated urinary tract infections, skin and skin-structure infections (including diabetic foot infections), gynaecological infections, bacteraemia/septicaemia associated with these infections, and empirical therapy in febrile neutropenia. Effective against Gram-positive, Gram-negative, and anaerobic organisms, including many beta-lactamase-producing strains.

How Tazobz-4.5gm Injection Works

Tazobz-4.5gm works in two complementary ways. Piperacillin attacks and weakens the outer wall of bacteria, causing them to break open and die. Tazobactam acts as a shield — it blocks the enzymes (beta-lactamases) that some bacteria produce to destroy penicillin-type antibiotics. Together, they defeat a much wider range of dangerous bacteria than either could alone.

Mechanism of Action

Piperacillin is an extended-spectrum ureidopenicillin that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), specifically PBP-1a, PBP-1b, and PBP-3, disrupting peptidoglycan cross-linking and causing cell lysis. Tazobactam is an irreversible inhibitor of class A and some class C beta-lactamases (including TEM, SHV, and certain AmpC variants), preventing enzymatic hydrolysis of piperacillin and restoring its activity against beta-lactamase-producing organisms such as Klebsiella pneumoniae, Escherichia coli, Bacteroides spp., and Staphylococcus aureus (non-MRSA).

Key Benefits

  • Broad-spectrum coverage against a wide range of Gram-positive, Gram-negative, and anaerobic bacteria
  • Tazobactam protects against antibiotic resistance caused by beta-lactamase-producing bacteria
  • Suitable for serious, life-threatening infections in hospitalised patients
  • Reliable option for empirical therapy while awaiting culture results

Did You Know?

The Piperacillin-Tazobactam combination is so effective against hospital-acquired infections that it is included in the WHO's list of Essential Medicines and is one of the most commonly used antibiotics in intensive care units worldwide.

When & How to Take

Tazobz-4.5gm Injection is given by intravenous infusion under the supervision of a doctor or qualified nurse in a hospital or clinical setting. The dose and duration of treatment are determined by the type and severity of the infection and must be followed exactly as prescribed by your doctor.

Always follow the dosage and schedule advised by your doctor — this is general guidance only.

Possible Side Effects

Common side effects may include diarrhoea, nausea, skin rash, headache, and pain or inflammation at the infusion site. Serious but rare effects include severe allergic reactions or Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhoea. Tell your doctor if any side effect is severe or persistent.

Precautions & Safety

  • Inform your doctor of any history of allergy to penicillins, cephalosporins, or other beta-lactam antibiotics
  • Use with caution in patients with severe kidney disease — dose adjustment may be needed
  • Monitor for signs of Clostridioides difficile-associated colitis (persistent diarrhoea) during and after treatment
  • Not suitable for use in children under 2 years except under specialist direction
  • Complete the full prescribed course even if symptoms improve earlier

Myths vs Facts

Myth

Stronger antibiotics like Piperacillin-Tazobactam should be used first for any infection.

Fact

Broad-spectrum antibiotics like Piperacillin-Tazobactam are reserved for serious or resistant infections. Using them unnecessarily can contribute to antibiotic resistance.

Myth

If you start feeling better, you can stop the antibiotic early.

Fact

Stopping early allows surviving bacteria to multiply and can lead to treatment failure or resistance. Always complete the full course your doctor prescribes.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is used to treat serious bacterial infections including pneumonia, abdominal infections, urinary tract infections, and skin infections, particularly in hospital settings.
Tazobactam prevents bacteria from destroying Piperacillin, making the combination effective against bacteria that have developed resistance to standard penicillin antibiotics.
It is given as a slow intravenous infusion in a hospital or clinical setting by trained healthcare staff.
It can be used in patients with kidney impairment, but the dose may need to be adjusted. Your doctor will monitor kidney function and modify the dose accordingly.
