Oflozia-OZ is a combination antibiotic tablet containing Ofloxacin 200 mg and Ornidazole 500 mg. This dual-action combination is prescribed for mixed infections where both bacteria and anaerobic organisms or parasites are involved, especially infections of the gut, gynaecological tract, and surgical wounds.
By combining the broad-spectrum antibacterial action of Ofloxacin with the anti-anaerobic and antiprotozoal activity of Ornidazole, Oflozia-OZ provides comprehensive coverage for complex infections in a single convenient tablet, as prescribed by your doctor.
This medicine is commonly used for:
Ofloxacin-Ornidazole combination is indicated for the treatment of mixed aerobic-anaerobic and protozoal infections including acute infectious diarrhoea, Giardia lamblia infections, pelvic inflammatory disease, intra-abdominal infections, and gynaecological infections. Ofloxacin provides coverage against gram-negative and gram-positive aerobic organisms, while Ornidazole addresses anaerobic bacteria, Trichomonas vaginalis, Giardia lamblia, and Entamoeba histolytica.
Ofloxacin in Oflozia-OZ kills aerobic bacteria by disrupting their DNA copying process, while Ornidazole targets and destroys anaerobic bacteria and parasites by damaging their genetic material. Together, they attack a much broader range of harmful microorganisms than either drug could handle alone, making the combination particularly effective for gut and gynaecological infections.
Ofloxacin inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, preventing DNA replication and inducing bacterial cell death. Ornidazole, a second-generation nitroimidazole, is reduced intracellularly by low-redox-potential ferredoxin-like proteins in anaerobic organisms, producing cytotoxic nitro radical anions that cause DNA strand breakage and disrupt nucleic acid synthesis in anaerobes, Giardia, Entamoeba, and Trichomonas. The synergistic dual mechanism ensures coverage of both aerobic and anaerobic pathogens.
Ornidazole has a longer half-life than Metronidazole (another commonly used nitroimidazole), which means it can sometimes be dosed less frequently, improving convenience and patient adherence.
Oflozia-OZ is generally taken after food to minimise stomach irritation, at regular intervals as prescribed by your doctor. Do not skip doses and complete the full prescribed course. Avoid alcohol completely during the course and for at least 48 hours after the last dose.
Always follow the dosage and schedule advised by your doctor — this is general guidance only.
Some people may experience nausea, vomiting, metallic taste in the mouth, dizziness, or stomach discomfort. A mild headache or skin sensitivity to sunlight may also occur. Alcohol must be strictly avoided as it can cause a severe reaction with Ornidazole. Tell your doctor if any side effect is severe or persistent.
This combination antibiotic is suitable for any type of stomach upset.
Oflozia-OZ targets specific bacterial, anaerobic, and parasitic infections. Not all stomach upsets are caused by such organisms. Always consult a doctor before taking antibiotics for digestive symptoms.
Having a small amount of alcohol while on this medicine is safe.
Even small amounts of alcohol can cause a severe reaction (disulfiram-like reaction) with Ornidazole, causing flushing, rapid heartbeat, and vomiting. Alcohol must be completely avoided.
