PATASAFE EYE DROPS contains Olopatadine 0.2% w/v, a selective H1-antihistamine and mast cell stabiliser specifically formulated for ophthalmic use. Olopatadine 0.2% is a once-daily formulation that provides 24-hour relief from the symptoms of allergic conjunctivitis — making it one of the most convenient ophthalmic antihistamines available.
Whether triggered by pollen, dust mites, pet dander, or other allergens, PATASAFE EYE DROPS addresses both the immediate allergic reaction and prevents mast cell degranulation, offering dual-action protection that starts working quickly and lasts all day.
This medicine is commonly used for:
Indicated for the prevention and treatment of signs and symptoms of allergic conjunctivitis, including itching, hyperaemia, chemosis, and lid oedema. Olopatadine 0.2% once-daily dosing is approved for seasonal and perennial allergic conjunctivitis and provides clinically superior duration of action compared to 0.1% formulations, allowing single daily instillation.
When you are exposed to an allergen, the immune cells in your eyes release a chemical called histamine that causes itching, redness, and watering. Olopatadine blocks histamine receptors so histamine cannot trigger these symptoms. It also stabilises the immune cells (mast cells) that release histamine in the first place, providing both immediate relief and prevention of the allergic response.
Olopatadine is a selective, potent antagonist at H1-histamine receptors on the conjunctival epithelium and subconjunctival tissue, competitively blocking histamine-induced responses including pruritus and vasodilation. Additionally, Olopatadine inhibits the degranulation of conjunctival mast cells, reducing the release of histamine, prostaglandins, leukotrienes, and other pro-allergic mediators upon allergen challenge. This dual mechanism (antihistamine + mast cell stabilisation) distinguishes Olopatadine from pure antihistamines. At 0.2%, once-daily dosing achieves therapeutic concentrations for 24 hours.
Olopatadine is one of the most extensively studied ophthalmic antihistamines in the world, with clinical trials involving tens of thousands of patients. Its 0.2% formulation was specifically developed to extend the duration of action to a full 24 hours, reducing instillation frequency from twice daily (0.1%) to once daily — improving patient adherence significantly.
Instil PATASAFE EYE DROPS in the affected eye(s) as prescribed by your doctor — the 0.2% formulation is typically prescribed once daily. Apply at a consistent time each day for reliable all-day relief. Avoid touching the dropper tip to the eye.
Always follow the dosage and schedule advised by your doctor — this is general guidance only.
Olopatadine eye drops are generally very well tolerated. Mild stinging or a transient burning sensation immediately after instillation may occur in some users. Headache and a slightly unpleasant taste are occasionally reported. Tell your doctor if any side effect is severe or persistent.
Oral antihistamines are enough to control allergic eye symptoms.
Oral antihistamines can help systemic allergy symptoms but often provide incomplete relief of ocular symptoms. Topical ophthalmic antihistamines like PATASAFE target the eye directly, delivering much higher local concentrations and faster, more effective relief for eye-specific allergy.
Antihistamine eye drops stop working if you use them every day.
Olopatadine does not cause tachyphylaxis (loss of effect with continued use). It can be used throughout the allergy season or year-round for perennial allergy with consistent efficacy.
