Picsolite Solution contains Sodium Picosulfate 5 mg per 5 ml, a stimulant laxative used for the relief of constipation. The oral solution allows flexible, measured dosing.
Sodium Picosulfate is a prodrug that is activated by naturally occurring bacteria in the large intestine, so it acts specifically in the colon and typically produces a bowel movement within 6 to 12 hours.
This medicine is commonly used for:
Indicated for the short-term symptomatic treatment of constipation and for conditions requiring facilitated defaecation, as prescribed by a registered medical practitioner.
Picsolite is activated in the large bowel, where it gently stimulates the muscles of the intestine to move stool along and draws water into the bowel to soften it. Taken at bedtime, it usually works by the next morning.
Sodium Picosulfate is a triarylmethane prodrug that is hydrolysed by colonic bacterial sulfatases to its active metabolite, bis-(p-hydroxyphenyl)-pyridyl-2-methane (BHPM). BHPM stimulates colonic mucosal nerve endings to increase peristalsis and promotes accumulation of water and electrolytes in the colonic lumen, softening stool and facilitating defaecation.
Sodium Picosulfate is inactive when swallowed. It only becomes active when the normal bacteria in the large intestine convert it - which is why it acts specifically in the colon rather than throughout the gut.
Take Picsolite Solution as directed by your doctor, usually once daily at bedtime, using the measuring cup provided. Drink plenty of water during the day. Do not use for more than a few days without medical advice.
Always follow the dosage and schedule advised by your doctor — this is general guidance only.
Abdominal discomfort, cramps, bloating and loose stools may occur. Prolonged or excessive use can cause diarrhoea and loss of fluid and electrolytes such as potassium. Stop and consult your doctor if you have severe abdominal pain or persistent diarrhoea.
Using laxatives every day is harmless.
Regular long-term use without medical advice can upset fluid and electrolyte balance. Lasting relief usually comes from fibre, fluids and activity, with laxatives used short-term.
A bowel movement every day is essential.
Normal bowel habits vary from three times a day to three times a week. Constipation is about hard, infrequent or difficult stools, not just missing a day.
