How Ziodine Gargle Works
When you gargle with Ziodine, Povidone Iodine releases free iodine directly in the oral cavity and throat. This free iodine penetrates the cell walls of bacteria, viruses, and fungi, disrupting their structure and killing them. The mint flavour makes the process pleasant and encourages regular use for maintaining oral hygiene and managing throat and mouth infections.
Mechanism of Action
Povidone Iodine (PVP-I) is a complex of polyvinylpyrrolidone and iodine that acts as a sustained-release iodine depot. Upon contact with tissues and microorganism surfaces, it releases free molecular iodine (I2) and hypoiodous acid (HOI), which rapidly penetrate microbial cell membranes and oxidise critical cellular constituents including nucleic acids, proteins, enzymes, and lipid membranes, leading to irreversible microbial inactivation. Its broad-spectrum activity covers gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, mycobacteria, fungi, protozoa, and enveloped viruses, including respiratory viruses. At 2% concentration, it achieves effective antisepsis with minimal tissue toxicity.
