Muprozia Ointment is a topical antibiotic preparation containing Mupirocin 2% w/w. Mupirocin is a naturally derived antibiotic used on the skin to treat and prevent certain bacterial infections, particularly those caused by Staphylococcus aureus — including strains resistant to many other antibiotics.
Muprozia Ointment is applied directly to the affected area of skin, making it a targeted and effective option for treating small, localized skin infections without the side effects associated with systemic antibiotic therapy.
This medicine is commonly used for:
Mupirocin 2% topical ointment is indicated for the treatment of primary skin infections due to susceptible strains of Staphylococcus aureus (including MRSA) and Streptococcus pyogenes, including impetigo and folliculitis. It is also used for nasal decolonisation of MRSA carriers in hospital settings under medical supervision.
Mupirocin works by blocking a specific enzyme that bacteria need to build proteins essential for their survival and multiplication. Without this enzyme, the bacteria cannot grow and eventually die, clearing up the infection on the skin.
Mupirocin is a naturally occurring antibiotic derived from Pseudomonas fluorescens. It reversibly inhibits bacterial isoleucyl-tRNA synthetase, preventing the incorporation of isoleucine into nascent bacterial protein chains and thereby halting protein synthesis. This mechanism is unique among topical antibiotics, resulting in no cross-resistance with other antibiotic classes. It is bacteriostatic at low concentrations and bactericidal at higher concentrations.
Mupirocin was originally isolated from the soil bacterium Pseudomonas fluorescens in 1971. Its completely unique mechanism — different from all other antibiotic classes — means bacteria that are resistant to common antibiotics like penicillin or tetracycline remain fully susceptible to it.
Apply Muprozia Ointment to the affected skin area as prescribed by your doctor, typically a small amount applied two to three times daily. Always complete the full course prescribed. Do not apply to large areas of broken skin unless directed by your doctor.
Always follow the dosage and schedule advised by your doctor — this is general guidance only.
Mupirocin is generally very well tolerated. Some people may experience mild burning, stinging, or itching at the application site. Rarely, skin redness or a localised allergic reaction may occur. Tell your doctor if any side effect is severe or persistent.
Mupirocin ointment can be used on any type of skin infection.
Mupirocin is specifically effective against certain bacterial infections (particularly Staphylococcus and Streptococcus). It does not work against fungal, viral, or all bacterial infections, so it should only be used for infections your doctor has confirmed are suitable for this treatment.
You can stop applying mupirocin once the sore looks better.
Stopping antibiotic treatment early can allow surviving bacteria to multiply and potentially become resistant. Always complete the full course prescribed by your doctor.
