Colinap Dry Syrup contains Colistin Sulphate, a polymyxin antibiotic, as a powder for oral suspension in an orange-flavoured paediatric formulation. Each 5 ml of reconstituted suspension provides 12.5 mg of Colistin Sulphate. The pack includes sterile water for accurate reconstitution.
When taken by mouth, colistin is very poorly absorbed into the bloodstream. It therefore acts mainly inside the intestine, where it targets susceptible gram-negative bacteria responsible for certain types of bacterial diarrhoea in children.
This medicine is commonly used for:
Indicated for the treatment of intestinal infections and bacterial diarrhoea caused by colistin-susceptible gram-negative organisms in paediatric patients, as prescribed by a registered medical practitioner. Oral rehydration remains essential alongside antibiotic therapy.
Colinap works inside the gut. Because very little of the medicine is absorbed into the blood, it stays in the intestine where it attacks the outer layer of certain harmful bacteria, killing them and helping the diarrhoea settle.
Colistin is a cationic polypeptide antibiotic. It binds to the lipopolysaccharide and phospholipids of the outer membrane of gram-negative bacteria, displacing calcium and magnesium ions. This disrupts membrane integrity, increases permeability and leads to leakage of cell contents and bacterial death. Oral colistin is minimally absorbed, giving high intraluminal concentrations with low systemic exposure.
Colistin is considered a last-resort antibiotic for serious drug-resistant infections. To protect its effectiveness, India banned the use of colistin in food-producing animals and animal feed in 2019. Using it only when prescribed helps slow antibiotic resistance.
Reconstitute the powder with the sterile water provided, following the instructions on the carton, and shake well before every dose. Give the dose and for the duration prescribed by your child's doctor, using a proper measuring device. Continue oral rehydration solution (ORS) as advised.
Always follow the dosage and schedule advised by your doctor — this is general guidance only.
Oral colistin is generally well tolerated because very little is absorbed. Nausea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort or skin rash may occasionally occur. Contact your doctor if your child develops a rash, persistent vomiting, blood in stools or signs of dehydration.
Every case of diarrhoea in children needs an antibiotic.
Most childhood diarrhoea is viral and settles with ORS, zinc and continued feeding. Antibiotics like colistin are needed only when a doctor suspects a bacterial cause.
Once the diarrhoea stops, the antibiotic can be stopped.
Stopping early can allow bacteria to survive and become resistant. Complete the course your doctor has prescribed.
