Ziapodxim Dry Syrup contains Cefpodoxime Proxetil 50 mg per 5 ml, a third-generation oral cephalosporin antibiotic formulated as a paediatric suspension for easy and accurate dosing in young children. Cefpodoxime is an ester prodrug that is rapidly converted to its active form in the body, providing broad-spectrum antibacterial action against many common bacterial pathogens.
Widely prescribed by paediatricians, Ziapodxim Dry Syrup is effective for treating bacterial infections such as ear infections, tonsillitis, chest infections, and urinary tract infections in children. The palatable suspension form makes it easy for parents to administer the medicine accurately.
This medicine is commonly used for:
Cefpodoxime proxetil oral suspension is indicated in paediatric patients for the treatment of susceptible bacterial infections including acute otitis media, pharyngitis and tonsillitis due to Streptococcus pyogenes, community-acquired pneumonia, acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, uncomplicated urinary tract infections caused by Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Proteus mirabilis, and uncomplicated skin and skin structure infections.
Cefpodoxime is absorbed from the gut and converted into its active form in the body. It then attacks and disrupts the protective cell wall that bacteria build around themselves, causing the bacteria to die. Because it is active against a wide range of bacteria, it can treat many common childhood infections effectively.
Cefpodoxime proxetil is an orally administered prodrug that is de-esterified in the intestinal wall to active cefpodoxime. Cefpodoxime, a third-generation cephalosporin, binds to penicillin-binding proteins (primarily PBP-3) in the bacterial cell wall, inhibiting transpeptidation of the peptidoglycan layer and causing bactericidal cell lysis. It demonstrates enhanced stability against many beta-lactamase enzymes and provides broad-spectrum coverage against both gram-positive and gram-negative organisms including H. influenzae, M. catarrhalis, S. pneumoniae, and enterobacteriaceae.
Cefpodoxime proxetil is what is known as a prodrug — the form in the tablet or syrup is not itself active. It is only converted into the active antibiotic (cefpodoxime) after absorption in the intestine. This design improves the oral bioavailability of the antibiotic.
Ziapodxim Dry Syrup should be given to the child as prescribed by the doctor. It can be taken with food, which helps improve absorption and may reduce stomach discomfort. Shake the bottle well before each dose, and complete the full course as directed.
Always follow the dosage and schedule advised by your doctor — this is general guidance only.
The most common side effects are diarrhoea, stomach upset, and nausea. A mild skin rash may occasionally occur. These effects are usually mild and temporary. Tell your doctor if any side effect is severe or persistent.
Antibiotics should be changed if the child does not improve within 24 hours.
Most antibiotics, including cefpodoxime, take 48–72 hours to show noticeable improvement. Changing the antibiotic prematurely can contribute to resistance. Always consult the doctor if you are concerned about the child's progress.
Antibiotic syrup is less effective than antibiotic tablets.
Antibiotic syrups contain the same active ingredient as tablets and, when dosed correctly by weight, provide equivalent therapeutic levels in the body. The syrup form simply makes it easier to give the correct dose to children.
