ALKAZIA SYRUP is a urinary alkalinising syrup containing Disodium Hydrogen Citrate 1.40 g per 5 ml. It works by making the urine less acidic, which helps relieve the discomfort of conditions caused by excess acid in the urinary tract and supports the prevention of certain types of kidney stones.
Recommended by doctors for conditions such as mild urinary tract discomfort and uric acid or oxalate stone management, ALKAZIA SYRUP offers a well-tolerated, palatable liquid formulation that is convenient for both adults and older children.
This medicine is commonly used for:
Disodium Hydrogen Citrate is indicated as a urinary alkaliniser in the management of uric acid lithiasis, mild oxalate urolithiasis, hyperuricosuria, and cystinuria. It is also used as adjunctive therapy in urinary tract infections caused by urea-splitting organisms where urinary alkalinisation is beneficial, and in the management of metabolic acidosis associated with renal tubular dysfunction.
ALKAZIA SYRUP works by releasing citrate in the body, which is converted to bicarbonate in the kidneys. This raises the pH of the urine, making it less acidic and helping to dissolve and prevent the formation of acid-based kidney stones. It also soothes the urinary tract lining, reducing the burning or stinging sensation during urination.
Disodium Hydrogen Citrate is metabolised hepatically to sodium bicarbonate, increasing the urinary pH and reducing free hydrogen ion concentration. Alkaline urine increases the solubility of uric acid, cystine, and certain calcium salts, thereby inhibiting crystallisation and stone formation. Citrate also directly chelates urinary calcium, reducing its availability for stone nucleation. The net systemic alkalinising effect is comparable to that of oral bicarbonate but with better palatability and gentler gastrointestinal profile.
Citrate, the active component released by Disodium Hydrogen Citrate, is naturally present in citrus fruits like lemons. Drinking lemon water has long been a folk remedy for kidney stones — and modern medicine has confirmed that citrate really does help prevent stone formation by inhibiting crystal growth in urine.
ALKAZIA SYRUP should be taken as prescribed by your doctor, usually diluted in water. Always follow your doctor's instructions regarding frequency and duration. Do not alter your dose on your own.
Always follow the dosage and schedule advised by your doctor — this is general guidance only.
ALKAZIA SYRUP is generally well tolerated. Some people may experience mild nausea, stomach upset, or loose stools, especially if taken without adequate water. Rarely, excessive alkalinisation may occur if taken in very high amounts. Tell your doctor if any side effect is severe or persistent.
Drinking more water alone is enough to prevent all kidney stones.
While staying well-hydrated is important, certain types of kidney stones — especially uric acid stones — also require the urine to be alkalinised. ALKAZIA SYRUP helps raise urinary pH specifically to discourage these stones from forming, something water alone cannot achieve.
Urinary alkalinisers like ALKAZIA are only for patients with severe kidney disease.
Urinary alkalinisers are commonly prescribed for a wide range of conditions, including mild urinary burning, recurrent uric acid stones, and gout-related high uric acid — they are not limited to severe kidney disease patients.
