Levzia-500 Tablet contains Levofloxacin 500 mg — a broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic with excellent activity against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, as well as atypical organisms. Levofloxacin is the pure L-isomer of ofloxacin, with enhanced antibacterial potency and a more favourable safety profile, making it one of the most widely prescribed antibiotics for respiratory, urinary, and skin infections.
Manufactured by Biozia Lifesciences, Levzia-500 is indicated for serious or complicated infections where broader antibiotic coverage is required. Its once-daily dosing schedule makes it highly convenient, and its excellent oral bioavailability means it is as effective orally as intravenous therapy for most indications.
This medicine is commonly used for:
Levofloxacin 500 mg is indicated for the treatment of infections caused by susceptible organisms including community-acquired pneumonia (including atypical pathogens: Legionella pneumophila, Chlamydophila pneumoniae, Mycoplasma pneumoniae), acute bacterial exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, acute bacterial sinusitis, complicated and uncomplicated urinary tract infections, acute pyelonephritis, chronic bacterial prostatitis, and skin and skin structure infections. It is also used as a second-line agent in the management of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) under specialist supervision.
Levofloxacin in Levzia-500 attacks bacteria at their core — it blocks the enzymes that bacteria use to copy and repair their DNA. Without functioning DNA machinery, bacteria cannot reproduce or survive, and the infection is cleared. Levofloxacin is particularly effective because it works against a very wide range of bacteria including some that are resistant to older antibiotics, and it reaches excellent concentrations in the lungs, urinary tract, and prostate.
Levofloxacin is a third-generation fluoroquinolone that exerts bactericidal activity by dual inhibition of bacterial DNA gyrase (topoisomerase II) and topoisomerase IV — enzymes essential for DNA supercoiling, replication, transcription, and repair. Inhibition causes accumulation of double-strand DNA breaks, leading to rapid bacterial cell death. The L-isomer configuration confers greater potency and selectivity compared to racemic ofloxacin. Levofloxacin achieves high oral bioavailability (~99%), excellent tissue penetration (particularly in pulmonary tissue, urinary tract mucosa, and prostatic secretions), and a half-life of 6–8 hours supporting once-daily dosing.
Levofloxacin achieves concentrations in prostate tissue that are 2 to 5 times higher than in plasma, which is why it is one of the few oral antibiotics that can effectively treat chronic bacterial prostatitis — a condition notoriously difficult to reach with most antibiotics.
Levzia-500 is typically taken once daily, with or without food, as prescribed by your doctor. Take at the same time each day for consistent blood levels. Drink plenty of water during treatment. Avoid antacids, iron, zinc, or sucralfate within 2 hours of taking this tablet. Always complete the full prescribed course.
Always follow the dosage and schedule advised by your doctor — this is general guidance only.
Common side effects include nausea, diarrhoea, headache, and dizziness. Levofloxacin can increase skin sensitivity to sunlight — avoid prolonged sun exposure and use sunscreen. Rarely, tendon pain or rupture (particularly the Achilles tendon) has been reported, most commonly in older patients or those on corticosteroids. Tell your doctor if any side effect is severe or persistent, especially any sudden tendon or joint pain.
Fluoroquinolones like levofloxacin are the best antibiotics for any infection.
Fluoroquinolones are powerful, broad-spectrum antibiotics reserved for specific infections — particularly those caused by atypical organisms or where other antibiotics have failed. Using them as first-line agents for simple infections promotes antibiotic resistance and exposes patients to unnecessary side effects. Always use the antibiotic prescribed by your doctor for your specific infection.
Tendon rupture from levofloxacin is very common and should make everyone avoid it.
Tendon problems are a rare but real risk, particularly in older adults, those taking corticosteroids, or those with pre-existing tendon problems. For most healthy adults, levofloxacin is safe and effective. Your doctor will weigh the benefits and risks for your individual situation.
