Ziacort-6 Suspension contains Deflazacort 6 mg, an oxazoline derivative of prednisolone, formulated as a suspension for easy oral administration. It is an anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressant corticosteroid used for a wide range of inflammatory and autoimmune conditions.
Deflazacort is valued for its potent anti-inflammatory effect with a relatively favourable calcium and bone safety profile compared to some other corticosteroids, making Ziacort-6 Suspension a trusted choice when oral corticosteroid therapy is required, particularly in paediatric patients.
This medicine is commonly used for:
Deflazacort is indicated in conditions requiring corticosteroid therapy, including: bronchial asthma (acute exacerbations and maintenance in steroid-dependent patients), nephrotic syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, severe allergic rhinitis, atopic dermatitis, and other inflammatory or autoimmune disorders. It is also indicated in Duchenne muscular dystrophy as an approved indication in certain regulatory frameworks.
Deflazacort is a corticosteroid — a powerful medicine that dials down the immune system's inflammatory response. When the body's immune reaction is too strong (as in severe allergies or autoimmune conditions), it can cause tissue damage and symptoms. Deflazacort reduces this over-reaction by controlling the signals that drive inflammation, giving the body a chance to heal and recover.
Deflazacort is a prodrug converted to its active metabolite 21-desacetyl deflazacort. As a corticosteroid, it binds to cytosolic glucocorticoid receptors (GR), forming a receptor-ligand complex that translocates to the nucleus and modulates transcription of anti-inflammatory genes (e.g., lipocortin-1/annexin A1, IL-10) while suppressing pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1, IL-6, TNF-alpha) and inhibiting phospholipase A2, thereby reducing arachidonic acid availability for prostaglandin and leukotriene synthesis. It also inhibits T-lymphocyte proliferation and reduces capillary permeability, resulting in anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects. Compared to prednisolone, it has relatively less calcium-depleting activity.
Deflazacort was originally developed in the 1960s and is derived from prednisolone. It gained particular global attention after being approved in some countries for Duchenne muscular dystrophy — a rare and serious genetic muscle disease — where it helps slow the progression of muscle weakness.
Ziacort-6 Suspension should be taken exactly as prescribed by your doctor — corticosteroids require careful dosing and should never be stopped abruptly. Shake the bottle well before use. It is usually taken in the morning with food to minimise stomach irritation.
Always follow the dosage and schedule advised by your doctor — this is general guidance only.
Common side effects with corticosteroid use include increased appetite, mild weight gain, mood changes, mild stomach upset, or trouble sleeping. Long-term use at higher doses may have additional effects — these will be discussed and monitored by your doctor. Tell your doctor if any side effect is severe or persistent.
Corticosteroids like Deflazacort are the same as anabolic steroids used by athletes.
Corticosteroids and anabolic steroids are entirely different classes of medicines. Corticosteroids are used medically to reduce inflammation and suppress overactive immune responses. They have no muscle-building properties and are not related to performance-enhancing steroids.
Once symptoms improve, it is safe to stop Deflazacort immediately.
Stopping corticosteroids abruptly can cause adrenal insufficiency, a serious withdrawal syndrome. The dose must always be tapered gradually under medical supervision, even when you are feeling much better.
