Scazia Lotion contains Permethrin 5% w/w, a highly effective synthetic pyrethroid antiparasitic agent used for the topical treatment of scabies — a highly contagious skin infestation caused by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei. Scazia Lotion is applied to the skin and left on to kill the mites and their eggs, providing thorough relief from the intense itching and skin discomfort scabies causes.
Permethrin 5% is recommended by dermatologists and recognised health authorities as a first-line treatment for scabies. Scazia Lotion is easy to apply, works on a single application in most cases, and is suitable for adults and children above the recommended age as advised by a doctor.
This medicine is commonly used for:
Permethrin 5% topical lotion is indicated for the topical treatment of scabies due to Sarcoptes scabiei in adults and children aged 2 months and above. It is also used in the management of pediculosis capitis (head lice) and pediculosis pubis (pubic lice). Application to all household and close contacts is recommended to prevent reinfestation.
Permethrin works by interfering with the nervous system of parasitic mites and lice. It disrupts the normal electrical signals in their nerve cells, causing paralysis and death of the parasites. A single overnight application to the entire body is usually sufficient to eliminate the infestation.
Permethrin is a synthetic type I pyrethroid that exerts its antiparasitic effect by binding to voltage-gated sodium channels in the neuronal membranes of arthropods, prolonging sodium channel opening. This results in repetitive neuronal discharges, paralysis, and death of Sarcoptes scabiei mites, their eggs, and louse species. Mammalian sodium channels are far less sensitive to permethrin and the compound undergoes rapid hydrolytic detoxification in human tissues, accounting for its selective toxicity to parasites.
Even after successful scabies treatment, itching can continue for up to 4 weeks. This is because the body's immune system continues to react to the dead mites and their waste products in the skin — it does not necessarily mean the treatment has failed.
Scazia Lotion is for external use only. Apply as directed by your doctor — typically a thorough application to the entire body from neck to toes (including skin folds and under the nails) and left on for the duration recommended before washing off. Follow your doctor's instructions on whether a second application is needed and when to treat close contacts.
Always follow the dosage and schedule advised by your doctor — this is general guidance only.
Some temporary stinging, burning, or itching at the application site may occur, particularly in areas of broken or inflamed skin. Mild redness or a rash may be noticed. These effects are usually short-lived. Tell your doctor if any side effect is severe or persistent, or if you develop signs of an allergic reaction.
Scabies is a sign of poor hygiene.
Scabies is caused by a microscopic mite and spreads through prolonged skin-to-skin contact — it can affect anyone, regardless of their cleanliness habits. The mite does not discriminate based on hygiene.
If I still itch after applying the lotion, it means the treatment did not work.
Post-treatment itching is very common and can last several weeks even after the mites are fully eliminated. This is an immune reaction, not a sign of treatment failure. Your doctor can advise on symptom relief during this period.
