Indications
Cefixime oral suspension is indicated in paediatric patients for the treatment of susceptible bacterial infections including acute otitis media caused by Haemophilus influenzae and Moraxella catarrhalis, pharyngitis and tonsillitis due to Streptococcus pyogenes, acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, uncomplicated urinary tract infections caused by Escherichia coli and Proteus mirabilis, and uncomplicated Salmonella typhi (enteric fever) infections.
How Cefzia-50 Dry Syrup Works
Cefixime works by attacking the outer wall of bacteria, preventing them from building and repairing it properly. Without a strong cell wall, the bacteria cannot survive and the infection clears up. It is effective against many common bacteria that cause infections in children.
Mechanism of Action
Cefixime is a third-generation oral cephalosporin that exerts bactericidal activity by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), principally PBP-3, thereby inhibiting transpeptidation and cross-linking of peptidoglycan strands in the bacterial cell wall. This leads to cell lysis and death. Cefixime demonstrates enhanced stability against beta-lactamase enzymes produced by gram-negative organisms, conferring broader gram-negative coverage compared with earlier cephalosporins.
